Postpartum Self-Care Guide (PAS Framework)

Pain & Discomfort
Problem: After birth, your body aches and wounds feel tender.
Agitate: Lingering soreness can steal your focus, disturb sleep and heighten stress.
Solution: Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen (as approved), apply cool compresses, soak in short warm baths, wear loose clothing and keep any C-section or tear clean and dry.
Bleeding & Uterine Changes
Problem: Heavy or foul-smelling lochia is worrisome.
Agitate: Excessive flow risks anemia and infection, making recovery longer and more exhausting.
Solution: Track color and volume, change pads often, lightly massage your lower belly while breastfeeding to help contractions, and call your provider if bleeding soaks one pad per hour or smells bad.
Warning Signs
Problem: Serious complications can arise unnoticed.
Agitate: Ignoring fever, sharp pain or dizziness could lead to hospital readmission.
Solution: Watch for fever over 100.4°F, heavy bleeding, worsening incision pain, foul discharge or breathlessness—and contact your healthcare team immediately.
Emotional Well-Being
Problem: Baby blues may tip into postpartum depression.
Agitate: Persistent sadness, anxiety or isolation hurts both you and your baby’s bond.
Solution: Practice deep breathing, journal daily victories, prioritize naps, talk with your provider, join support groups or call perinatal hotlines if low mood intensifies.
Feeding Challenges
Problem: Latch issues, engorgement or low supply frustrate new parents.
Agitate: Struggling feeds can undermine confidence and baby’s nutrition.
Solution: Check latch (wide mouth, flanged lips), use warm compresses, hand-express to relieve pressure, nurse 8–12 times daily, clean pump parts well, and store milk safely (4 hours room temp, 4 days fridge, 3–6 months freezer).
Sleep Deprivation
Problem: Newborns wake every 45–90 minutes.
Agitate: Chronic exhaustion impairs judgment, mood and healing.
Solution: Follow AAP safe-sleep rules (back only, firm surface, no loose items), nap when baby naps, dim lights, enlist help for diaper changes and alternate night duties.
Support & Boundaries
Problem: Unchecked visitors and isolation drain your energy.
Agitate: Feeling overwhelmed or alone amplifies stress and hinders recovery.
Solution: Set clear visiting hours, request specific help (meals, chores), hold daily check-ins with your partner, and find peer groups online or locally.
Nutrition & Mindfulness
Problem: Poor meals and dehydration slow healing and sap energy.
Agitate: Low blood sugar, weakness and irritability make parenting harder.
Solution: Eat balanced plates (½ veggies/fruits, ¼ protein, ¼ whole grains), drink 8+ cups of water, take short walks or stretches, and pause for 2-minute body scans or focused breathing before tasks.
