7 Simple Ways to Reduce Postpartum Swelling

In the first week after birth, mild puffiness in your hands, feet and ankles is common as your body sheds extra fluid. These 7 simple strategies can help ease postpartum swelling safely at home.
- Elevate Your Legs: Whenever you sit or rest, prop your feet on a pillow or ottoman for 10–15 minutes. This encourages fluid to flow back toward your heart and reduces ankle and foot puffiness.
- Move Gently: Short walks, ankle pumps and seated leg circles boost circulation without straining you. Aim for 10–15 minutes of light activity two or three times a day, as approved by your provider.
- Stay Hydrated: Sip water steadily throughout the day to support kidney function. Adequate hydration helps flush extra fluid, supports milk supply and maintains energy.
- Use Cold Compresses & Contrast Baths: Apply a cool pack wrapped in cloth to swollen areas for up to 10 minutes. For contrast baths, alternate soaking your feet or hands in warm (3 minutes) and cool (1 minute) water, repeating twice.
- Balance Sodium and Potassium: Keep sodium under 2,300 mg daily by choosing fresh foods over processed snacks. Add potassium-rich options like bananas, sweet potatoes and leafy greens to regulate fluid levels.
- Track Your Symptoms: Note when and where swelling occurs, how it feels (soft vs. firm) and any accompanying signs like headaches or redness. Symmetrical, soft puffiness is usually normal, but one-sided swelling with pain may signal a clot.
- Rest and Ask for Help: Build short rest breaks into feeding or diaper changes—elevate your feet and practice deep breathing for a few minutes. Delegate household tasks to partners or friends so you can focus on recovery.
If swelling worsens suddenly, appears only in one leg or comes with headaches, blurred vision or high blood pressure, contact your healthcare provider right away. With these tips and gentle patience, you’ll notice fluid shifts settling and feel more comfortable each day.
